The history of Gothenburg University Library goes back to the 1860s. Today the Library is one of the major research libraries of Europe.
As part of University of Gothenburg the Library has responsibility for supplying literature and library services to 40,000 undergraduate students, a staff of 5,100, and 2,600 postgraduate students.
To meet specific needs of the university faculties, the activity of the Library is divided into seven branches. The Library administers material in printed as well as digital form within all subject areas except chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
Gothenburg University Library has also national responsibility for collecting and preserving literature in the social sciences and gender research. The commitment implied by these national tasks is extensive.
