Women's struggle for knowledge

The struggle for knowledge and the right to education began in the nineteenth century. Government schools were first instituted in Sweden in 1842, with compulsory schooling for both girls and boys. On the other hand, it was not as self-evident that even girls should have the right to higher educa-tion.

This portal tells the story of the struggle that led up to women’s achievement of the right to matricu-late and to attend a university. We do this with the aid of newly written texts, old documents, pho-tographs and other materials.
