Akademiskt bildade kvinnors förening, ABKF, (The Association of Academically Educated Women) was founded in 1904 by women who had been permitted to take their academic degrees since 1873, but who did not have access to state appointments. According to the constitution, these were reserved for the male sex. Anna Ahlström was the person who took the initiative to the association and the first chairwoman was Elsa Eschelsson, D. Jur. and senior lecturer. The association acted in the beginning as a national campaign organisation for women’s right to higher offices and their right to equal salaries. In 1947, the association changed its name to Kvinnliga akademikers förening, KAF, (The Swedish Association of University Women).
