Love, power and sisterhood. About the website.

With this website, we - KvinnSam, National resource library for gender studies at Gothenburg University Library - attempt to document the second-wave women's movement in Sweden. The website is directed to students and teachers at upper secondary schools, folk high schools, universities, university colleges, and others with an interest in the field.

The portal is part of our project to give an historical account of the Swedish women's movement. Other portals are

The History section gives an account of the origin and activities of the new women's movement, with an emphasis on Group 8.

The Biographies section portrays some of the women's movement's pioneers.

The Organizations section presents some of the most prominent groups, e.g. Grupp 8 (Group 8), Kvinnoligan (Women's league), and Arbetets kvinnor (Women at work).

Work, strikes, day nurseries were three important areas in the women's struggle.

Personal/political: "The personal is political" was a common slogan when issues of abortion, amended legislation on rape, and the right to child-care were debated.

Women's centres and women's shelters emerged in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Culture section treats the movement's commitment to art, theatre, music, and other cultural areas.

Research was another area where women were prominent. During this period, women's studies became an academic discipline.

The development in Sweden can be followed in Notable years.

Further reading is a guide to further literature on the subject.

The History section is written by Eva Schmitz, PhD in Sociology. Other texts are written by Eva Schmitz and Berith Backlund, Librarian at KvinnSam, the National resource library for gender studies at the University of Gothenburg. The English translation has been made by Lena Sundin. Much data comes from Harriet Clayhills, Kvinnohistorisk uppslagsbok [Encyclopedia of Women's History], 1991.
