rocktexter av Turid Lundqvist, Eva Dahlgren och Kajsa Grytt
Abstract: The present thesis studies rock lyrics written by three Swedish female rock artists: Turid Lundqvist (first album in 1971), Eva Dahlgren (1978), and Kajsa Grytt (1980). The lyrics are analysed as mediated, popular texts, and on two levels: first, a survey of main themes within each authorship; second, and most important, close readings of selected song lyrics. Explanations for the occurence of certain themes and motifs are sought for in the contexts of the texts, in particular their cultural contexts.

Four main theoretical traditions have been used in order to interpret and understand the lyrics: cultural studies, theories of modernity, psychoanalysis and feminist literary and media theory.

The study indicates that certain key themes are central in the work of the three women. In the work of Turid Lundqvist, themes related to knowledge and change are central. Eva Dahlgren's texts are centred around authenticity and ambivalence, while the work of Kajsa Grytt focuses on feelings and (the female) body.

In terms of themes and motifs, then, there are more differences than similarities between and in these three authorships. This indicates that there is not one definite type of female rock text, but a textual polyphony, where the textual `I's speak from different and continually shifting positions. It also indicates that there is not just one single popular culture, but a cultural polyphony, full of intertextual interchanges between `high' and `low' forms.
